In its latest project, the YouthTanzTheater of the Ballet Dortmund follows in the footsteps of the brilliant artist Pablo Picasso. He himself is said to have described his career once in this way: “When I was a child, my mother said to me: If you become a soldier, you will become a general. When you become a monk, you will eventually become Pope. Instead, I tried as a painter and became Picasso.

It is not to be mistaken that he has left his mark with his absolute sense of beauty, measure, colour and form of modernity. All phases of his work – as different as they may be – always reflected his search for discovery, experience and new development. His great concern was that this path ends one day like a wall.

Painting is not an aesthetic undertaking, it is a form of magic, destined to be mediators between that foreign, hostile world and us. It is a way of seizing power for us by giving shape to our horror and our longings.

In Picasso young dancers show the work of the exceptional artist Pablo Picasso. In the performance, seven parts of his working phases are interpreted on stage. Starting with the chaos in his head and the begin-ning of the Blue Period, moving on to the melancholy of the Rose Period, followed by his revolutionary works of Cubism. From the classic phase to Guernica, the variety of his art is shown by Justo Moret’s virtuoso choreography and highlighted with the music by Tommy Finke who is known for his compositions at the Schauspiel Dortmund. Within the scope of PlayOn!, the Academy for Theatre and Digitality cooperated with the Creative Technologist Fehime Seven to create a unique experience for the audience.

Our aim was to create the magic where art and technology come together. For me it was special to translate movement into an app THEATRE DORTMUND |ACADEMY FOR THEATRE AND DIGITALITY(DE)and work on the interdisciplinary moments of the production to make it special for everybody.” Fehime Seven, Creative Technologist

The cooperation with the Academy of Theatre and Digitality creates unusual perspectives for the stage, as well as for the spectators. A “digital programme booklet” accompanies the way from the foyer to the auditorium and allows the dance dancers to have their say in advance. In the YouthTanzTheater, non-professional dancers have dedicated themselves to dance and rehearsed several times a week for their project.

In cooperation with the Academy of Theatre and Digitality. Piece development within the framework of the project PlayOn! sponsored by the European Union.
