Kolibri Színház

(Budapest, Hungary)

Founded in 1992 by János Novák, executive and artistic director, composer and theatre director, Kolibri Theatre for Children and Youth is the only professional children’s and youth theatre in Hungary which has its own company and performs for children as young as 0 and up to 18 years of age.

It houses three performance venues, roughly corresponding for the three different age groups: the main auditorium in Kolibri Theatre hosts comprehensive artwork productions for 6 to 12-year-olds and their families; Kolibri Fészek (Kolibri Nest) is a theatre room for the youngest audiences; and Kolibri Pince (Kolibri Cellar) offers productions for young adult audiences and TIE activities.

Kolibri’s repertory of 33 plays ranges from adaptations of classic and contemporary Hungarian and world literature to puppet shows, fairy tale plays, operas and physical theatre. Owing to János Novák’s inventive initiations, Kolibri is a pioneer in establishing new genres in Hungarian children’s theatre by introducing live music on stage, theatre for babies and toddlers, classroom theatre and youth performances, as well as new adaptations of novels for screenplay and stage. Kolibri produces 4 to 8 premieres per season, stages 550 performances and receives 50,000 visitors per season.

„We grow up together!” – Kolibri Theatre’s motto conveys our mission to offer each age group high-standard productions that are suitable for their mental and emotional development, and to accompany children through the stages of artistic experience.

Kolibri Theatre is also connected with the Hungarian University of Fine Art for the PlayOn! project.
